CradlePoint and WRT54G?

I have a problem I seem to not be able to find the answer to. Here is my issue…
I have a Cradlepoint that we use for internet access(we live in the sticks). All 4 computers are connected to that. I also have a xbox 360 I would like to connect to it. I want to set the wrt54g by the tv and connect the 360 to it and also a media center pc i am putting together. So I need the wrt54g to take the cradlepoint’s signal and pass it to the 360 and pc.? both of which will be connected via network cable
I forgot to mention the important part. I need the connection between them to be wireless. The cradlepoint is mounted 50 ft away so i could get a good signal. Is there a way for the wrt54g to receive the signal and then pass it onto one of the network ports?

Unplug one of the computers from the Cradlepoint. Plug an ethernet cable into the port you just disconnected from, and plug the other end into the #1 LAN port (must use #1 port for this connection) on the Linksys (not WAN!). Plug the computer you just disconnected into another of the Linksys LAN ports. Connect the Xbox and the media center into the other 2 LAN ports. Leave the WAN port on the Linksys open. You’re basically using the Linksys as a managed switch to attach extra devices to an existing router (Cradlepoint). You could do the same thing with a less expensive 8-port switch and just plug everything into it.

There are many misconceptions about IPTV, but Geof Heydon, Director of Innovation and Market Development at Alcatel, is an expert in the IPTV future. In this interview he separates fact from fallacy in the IPTV and “multi-service network” world. For one thing, IPTV is delivered over a separate IP network that is not the Internet. It is not something you can do on the Web today (or even in the future). It is about offering video in all its forms, TV on demand, free-to-air TV and even pay-TV together – and richly imbued with simultaneously available multiple broadband connections, Voice Over IP phone circuits, video conferences and so on. But it will take place on a very different kind of network from those in use in Australia today.

Heydon explains the work to evolve the existing broadband networks towards IPTV, but also the entirely new networks that may be built to succeed the existing HFC cable when the latter wears out. Only new networks will be able to overcome the high “background contention ratios” that prevent today’s networks from delivering the end-to-end performance needed for IPTV. It is that high speed that allows IPTV features such as quick channel changes. ADSL2+ is a major upgrade to the access component of the network and that is one significant requirement of IPTV.

But that’s just a start, says Heydon. You also need the network backbone to be upgraded, and for a small country such as Australia, it is not clear that the market can be allowed to look after itself without a visionary Government ensuring faster networks are implemented via a sensible regime of new incentives to the broadband industry. Heydon talks about the issues that have faced SBC, a telco in the USA that is using IPTV from Alcatel and Microsoft to wage combat against the leaching of triple play cable competition. (The SBC IPTV offering is expected to light up at the end of this year.) Heydon talks about broadband companies in places such as Italy, where FastWEB has many lessons for the Asia Pacific region.

Heydon also talks about the specifics of today’s user experience, with early systems such as the Microsoft Windows Media Centre and the Elgato EyeTV, or the Foxtel IQ PVR, offering the first glimpse of the IPTV benefits, but nowhere near the actual promise of a fully realised IPTV regime. Trickle fed video services on today’s Internet can’t deliver Standard Definition, let alone High Definition channels, with hundreds of such channels being instantly accessible. That requires a lot more network sophistication and a TV-oriented experience, rather than a PC-oriented experience.

And such a unified delivery system also establishes a unified TCP/IP environment so that 3G networks’ video-capable mobile handsets will seamlessly interoperate with the TV world, allowing applications to interoperate across both platforms with video shared and used appropriately on each. That means a unified user identification system, with a dramatic decrease in the number of passwords people will need to remember. It also means a much better capacity for the network to intuit each user’s needs based on its understanding of the user’s personal wants and needs as they assume each “personality” in their broadband life. Notwithstanding the potentially chilling confidentiality issues, one result will be that TV will serve different advertisements to children, as compared with when the parents watch TV later in the evening. It means a game player’s profile in shoot ‘em ups (established during that person’s teen years) will be maintained separately from that player’s more sober business profile during a day in the office.

In the IPTV world, it will also be possible for each device in a consumer’s life to control or access each other device. For example, a parent may use a Personal Digital Assistant while on the road, to transmit a message to the TV screen telling the children it is time for bed.

Heydon describes a metaphor: when water and electricity were installed a century ago, no one anticipated the dishwasher or clothes washing machine. But the way those early utility services, once so separate, eventually converged into new forms so useful that they are almost ubiquitous throughout the developed world, is a signpost to how today’s broadband services are likely to mix and match into new and ubiquitous forms in coming years.

And that thinking raises the vital issue of how entrepreneurs and technology strategists will profit from these changes. Both sides claim rights to the truth.
The only local broadcasting that networks provide is NEWS.. There are less people watching TV, instant and current news is available on the internet 24/7, and in search of original entertainment TV viewers are also seeking entertainment on the Internet. Television Networks could have worked with this technology but like the newspaper industry the networks have assumed a holier position. Their attitude that -Networks are the true broadcasters,that they are bringing quality programming to viewers living rooms, and I guess I would describe the network attitude is similar to the auto manufacturers. They know what the consumer wants and what’s good for them is good for the country and the people. Well the auto industry has already imploded, the news paper industry is struggling for survival and now network TV is whining for up to a 400 million bailout so they can do their job an deliver local programming.
NO BAILOUT – I made a video for that over a year ago and have addressed the changing viewer climate numerous times since then in YouTube videos, I would love the opportunity to address the CRTC. We have had direct contact with broadcasters and networks with first hand knowledge of the cavalier attitude they have.
The Cable industry also needs a wake up call, more competition is required so they loose the monopoly and consumers can receive better rates for telecommunication.
Finally instead of funding CBC with nearly 1 billion of tax payers money, the federal government should be setting up a high speed Internet grid that covers the country and access to the Internet should be free to all Canadians, it is the future. FREE INTERNET TO ALL CANADIANS!

According to federal government estimates, total spending on the CBC will be reduced by $62.8 million in the 2009-10 fiscal year equivalent to 5.6 per cent of the broadcaster’s annual $1.3 billion budget (of which $930 million, or about $28 for each Canadian, is taxpayer funded). CBC president Hubert Lacroix has also said advertising revenue will sink by as much as $65 million this year.

am I supposed to be able to get the internet like this? 10 points!?

just got a directtv dvr, and in order to get on demand movies on direct tv, it says you must connect the dvr to the internet, and there is a place in the back of the direct tv dvr box where you can connect a local area network cable (I assume the other end should connect to a computer to get the internet). But whenever I try to connect via the dvr with a local area network cable I just get a yellow triangle with a black exclamation point inside of it next to the local area connection icon, and it says "limited or no connectivity." I have had this problem when I was in college, and simply had to manually release/renew my IP address or refresh the network to fix it. But I did that, and the local area connection still will not work. I also right clicked it and chose repair, and unplugged the local area network cable, left it unplugged for about an hour and tried to connect again, but still I get the yellow exclamation point. So is there a reason why I get the yellow exclamation point when trying to connect to the internet via the dvr box? A way to fix it? Or am I even supposed to be able to get the internet like that, and if not then what do they mean when they say "connect your dvr to the internet"?
Keep in mind that other than trying to use the dvr, I do not have internet access at home (I am at the library now).

The network cable you are using should connect from your DVR to an internet connection, such as a cable modem or a router. You could probably connect ‘through’ a computer that has an internet connection, but you would need to make sure that the computer’s internet connection was shared.

If you are connecting to a modem or router you will need to make sure your network cable is a patch cable. If you are connecting through a computer with a shared internet connection you will need to use a crossover cable.

To identify which cable type you have, hold the ends so that the connectors are side by side. Check the order of the colours from left to right. If the colours are in the same order on each connector then you have a patch cable. If they differ then it is a crossover cable.

However, this all depends on you having an internet connection in the first place. If you do not have one, you cannot connect at all.
