What is the best computer software for learning different languages that is not too expensive?

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Looking to learn a language (yes I took Spanish in school but this gal (not guy) no habla espanol as we partied too much in the 3 years I took it!) preferably French and maybe another after that (German, Italian, Japanese, or maybe Korean so I can actually understand when my relatives are talking about me other than the traditional stare at you then laugh).

I’ve seen all sorts of software packages and they all claim to be easy to understand and learn and they all are at various prices. Recently I’ve seen advertised on television Rosetta Stone and didn’t know if anyone can recommend it, has tried it and learned their desired language or tried it and failed (or in my chiropractors case he bought it and it’s still sitting in the box, unwrapped underneath his desk), etc? I just check Rosetta Stone out on the internet (http://www.rosettastone.com/tv) and it is pricey especially when you figure on going past French 1, each volume is well over $200. Yikes!

Any online courses maybe that aren’t too terribly expensive but still good?

And yes I’ve thought about attending my local junior college to take French but as a single parent working full-time and trying to keep up with the demands of an almost 16 year old & all her activities and school work there really isn’t any time. Wish there was as it would be less expensive and probably easier/nicer to learn from an actual person rather than computer software.

Thanks in advance!

,,,Try transparent.com and byki.com. They both have free downloads and the ones you pay for are cheaper than Rosetta. Another one is Free Course Rocket French.
And don’t forget: The French tutorial….it’s awesome.

Question about going to mainly ‘online’ television watching?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

I was thinking about dropping back to basic cable, which is included in my homeowner’s association fees, and getting rid of extended cable service and all the movie channels I subscribe to, which right now costs about $70 a month extra. Since I have to pay the same HOA fees whether I watch cable or not, it makes no sense to drop it entirely. With basic cable, I’ll still have about 30 channels, including local stations.

I was also thinking of getting a dedicated computer to use for watching television and movies (Netflix streaming videos, HULU, Youtube, shows on various network websites, etc.).

My question is this:

What equipment should I consider buying, and what hookups, video cards, software, etc. do I need to get on the new computer? I have a 1080p LCD television with 2 hdmi inputs, and I also have a modern home theater receiver (Harman Kardon AVR-354) with 3 hdmi in and 1 hdmi out.

I’m mainly interested in how I should spec out the computer, plus whether or not I should buy peripheral devices that make TV watching easier. I will be using a DSL connection, but I can upgrade it to a cable internet connection if need be, though my provider claims their cable connection is no faster than their DSL.

Thanks!!!!!

Any computer with an HDMI video out will do, but expect to be dissapointed.

If it has Windows Media center and an ATSC/cable tuner, then you can use it as a DVR as well.

Netflix works, but it is about DVD quality and you need at least 2.5 Mbits/s for that. Youtube, Hulu, etc, are also pretty low resolution, so on a 1080p TV they will look pretty bad.

Perhaps your homeowners assoc. will install (or allow you to install) a good antenna to watch off-the-air free HD programming from local channels.

What kind of laptop should i get?

I am looking for a laptop. This will be used for capturing video from a television and video editing, that is it. I want to upload the videos to the internet when im done editing. So my needs in a laptop are internet connection, ability to store videos, and enough space to run a video editing software. Whats the fastest & best software where I can download movies that are in theaters & complete TV seasons?

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Right now I am using LimeWire but I can never find in the movies that are in theaters or on DVD. Also it is hard to find complete television seasons and it is always slow. I have DSL Internet so I don’t understand why it takes a week to download a one hour show. Somebody please help! Remember 10 points goes to the best! Good luck!

Limewire is terrible, it’s slow, badly written and full of viruses.

Go for BitTorrent. It’s a bit harder to use but much faster and less likely to have malware unless you download a lot of porn from dodgy sites.

Use Azureus software: http://sourceforge.net/projects/azureus/

Sites to search:
www.mininova.org
www.isohunt.org
www.thepiratebay.com

There are lots more BitTorrent tracker sites but those three will get you started.

How can I create a simple TV station using a Mac?

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Our company has an internal television channel using a Win95 custom software broadcasting videos in a loop. I’ve been assigned the task of ‘updating’ this system and have no clue where to begin. I’m supposed to use mac hardware (mac mini) but the running the videos and info is what baffles me? Is there any software out there that will allow me to schedule the playing of videos, while at the same time running (internet style) ads and messages?

Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated!

A TV station wouldn’t be "simple" to begin with. You may want to contact a major national studio and find out what they are doing. A pleasant email to the right person can work wonders. I wish you the very best luck.

Where can I download free software for playing JPG files in standard DVD player?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

I have a bunch of pictures in jpg format which I want to convert into a slideshow, preferably with music…I want to be able to play the slideshow in a Standard Onida DVD Player, which can be viewed on a television set…I had a software which allowed me to do the same, but the same is not available now…can somebody suggest any software which can be downloaded from the internet for free and allow me to do the needful…
Some one here has asked me to search in google…searching in google is the most obvious thing anybody would do and only if that does not yield any results, ask for an answer from others…
I think the answerer is more interested in earning points than in helping someone…if this is the kind of answer you have, please do not bother…

Thank you Savitashri for your precise answer…it has been the most useful so far…

I think there is no such FREE DVD slideshow software better than windows DVD maker! But you could try following software for some of your request features:
Virtual dub
A powerful freeware video editor with lots of features, including a choice of compression codecs, splitting, addition of audio tracks. Excellent.

WAX
Wax is a high performance and flexible video compositing and special effects software. The idea for Wax is to be very general purpose and flexible in video compositing and effects.

For more advanced and professioanl but still user friendly software, i will recommend DVD Slideshow Builder. It’s commercial software but worthy.

Are still there programs on us or british tv relating to computing, programming or internet ?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

I’m looking for programs like .tv on Sky Television, formerly called "the computer channel" with several matters concerning using software, tips, faqs, games. There were programs on us tv but I’m not abmle to say a word about them. I’m wondering why there is no such programs in France, knowing a lot of them exist about poker, cars, cooking, etc… which are activities that people are more at ease with.

Yes, theres ‘Click’ which is a BBC programme, thats mainly about the internet, but they showcase new technologies now and again, its shown a few tmies a week, got this from the BBC website

When can I watch Click?

UK viewers:

BBC News 24: Saturday at 11:30 & 20:30, Sunday at 04:30, 07:35 and 15:30, Monday at 00:30.

A slightly shorter version during BBC Breakfast is shown on:

BBC News 24 & BBC One: Saturday at 06:45.

International viewers:

Click is also shown on the BBC’s commercial and international channel, BBC World. Please visit the BBC World website for full scheduling details:
bbcworld.com

On the website:

You can watch the latest programme online using the video link near the top right of this page or any other page on the Click website. The programme will play in the BBC News Player. The internet edition of Click is always updated at 04:30 on Sundays.
