I’m American, but currently live in France. Now, my French isn’t nearly good enough to understand French television, so I haven’t watched TV in a while. But I was wondering today, is their any way to aquier NBC, CBS, etc, via satellite or possiblely internet for free or prehaps a resonable fee from within Western Europe?

I recently moved to France from the UK and would like to watch UK terrestial TV. We still have our skybox and card but we live in a flat & satellite dishes aren’t allowed. We then went for cable tv but the only UK channels we get are BBC Prime, BBC world and Sky News. Is there anyway to pick up the live UK broadcasts (rather than individual shows) from BBC, ITV, C4+C5 via the internet? What software would I need? (I’d prefer something that doesn’t require opening up the PC if possible)

I find it so annoying that i can’t watch 3pm premier league games in the UK on the tv. I know that they are available through the internet via streaming but the quality is’nt great and through other satellite systems but why is it that sky and setanta just show us the games that we deserve to watch. Its a league that is played in the UK and we have the least live games shown whereas countries abroad can get every game live.

It’s all because of the money involved, all of it is now. 3pm games aren’t shown because if they were, people wouldn’t bother going to watch them. Every where you have to pay to watch football. Italian football on Five currently is the only one of the top four European Leagues to be shown live on terrestrial TV in a major European market.

One thing i miss from the state is the tv channels. Can i get them over in England via the internet or perhaps getting a differenet satellite dish?

because of licensing reasons, broadcasters cannot transmit outisde the area they are supposed to transmit to.
So if you try to watch some abc.com shows, it will tell you that you can’t watch it.
Satellite is not going to work as the sat is geostationary over the equator and beaming data to the US. in europe, you won’t even see the satellite, let alone get a signal from it.

You may be able to have a friend set up orb.com or a similar service at their house so you can watch their TV channels.

With the proliferation of American english via the internet and satellite TV, and ‘new’ words being the same in every language e.g. texting, blogging etc will different languages ultimately give way to one, common one in say, 200 years time?

It’s already pretty much decided to be English. Very common throughout the world in the language of international law, culture, relgion and science.

No scientific paper has a ghost of a chance to be accepted internationally until it is translated into English. The same with great literature. Most if not all international treaties have to be published in English in order to have standing in the world community.

There is no grand conspiracy involved either, despite what the French and Iranians may believe. English is simply a very effective language with a vast volcubuary and one that readily adopts new words from other languages to express new ideas or concepts, or which creates them from stratch.

English is already the global language and it is likely to be the vastly predominate one within 50 years to the exclusion of minor ones in small nations.

i live in the country where i can’t get cable and don’t wanna deal with satellite so i was wonderin if i could get cable tv programming though my internet connection or xbox 360 console

Not directly, unless your internet provider offers IPTV.

Indirectly, you can get some content on the internet and through the Xbox360s online store.

If toy want trouble free normal TV service, you should really consider satellite. It isn’t that bad to deal with really.
