November 10th, 2010Will converting from WPA to WEP affect my Comcast phone/internet?
November 10th, 2010I am trying to use Tivo series 2 with my wireless router (DLink G54), which is WPA. Tivo tech says I need to call DLink and convert to WEP so that I can update my Tivo software to 8.0. (I tried to use the phone line for this, but it didn’t work due to Comcast phone). WEP concerns me for 2 reasons: 1. it seems WPA is best based on other posts and 2. Will converting to WEP screw up my internet and phone use, since both use the wireless router? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Also, if add’l is helpful: I started with the Netgear wireless adptr for the Tivo but it didn’t work even tho it was a Tivo appvd model, so Tivo sent me the Tivo brand adapter. This has been a treacherous process! I may just ditch the Tivo. I have Comcast DVR on our main tv, but thought Tivo would be good upstairs to access music etc from my computer. Thank you again for input!
Remember, WEP and WPA are wireless security features, not wired features. Unless you are telling me your phone is wireless, which I doubt, your phone service will not be affected. Also, if you connect your Tivo directly to your router, there is no need to worry about wireless security.
As for your internet, yes it can be impacted. If you are changing security features, you will need change it on any computers that are receiving internet wirelessly. Again, any computer connected directly to the router via ethernet cable will not be affected.
Personaly, I think WPA and WEP are a joke. It takes up bandwidth and therefore slows your internet connection down. I prefer MAC filtering. You get the security, but no performance bottlenecks.
How can i view(watch) and record shows from the internet TV using Windows Media Player?
November 10th, 2010Can i actually use the Windows Media Player to view(watch) and record shows from the internet TV? If yes, please tell me how, and what version of Windows Media Player can i use or please give a software or another media player that i can use. Thank you very much.
Internet TV is being used widely now. You may not be able to watch Internet TV with Windows Media player but there are other extremely good media players (check source) which can serve the same purpose.

Any way to get a better cellphone signal?
October 23rd, 2010Over the last few months, i’ve been communicating with my friend an increasingly amount via texting. The problem with this is, that i happen to live in a deadzone. And on top of that, my house also has a metal roof that severely hinders my phone’s signal.
There is all but about 3 windows in my house where i get a decent signal. Luckily, one is right by my desk and bed. But it’s still unbelievably annoying to reach 5 feet every time i have to send or receive a message. And plus i’ve dropped my phone several times due to bumping it off the window seal. It’s really only a matter of time until it breaks.
My carrier is Verison, and my phone is an LG Cosmos if that helps any.
My family is on a(As the people at verison put it) a horribly out-dated family plan that’s close to becoming obsolete all together. But, it’s rather cheap for the 3 people we have on it so we decide to stick with it until it actually does.
When i was at the verison store a few months ago, i saw some sort of modem looking device. And what i got from the description on it, it seemed like a device that hooked into your landline and was able to also connect to all of your cellphones and send messages/calls through that. But I’m pretty sure that’s a higher-end package that includes internet, phone, and cellphone(not to mention it most likely costs a lot).
And also we would have to shift every single one of our digital package deals. Our satellite TV, internet, and phone are provided through a Windstream Communications package.
Is there any way around my terrible signal? Or am i really stuck with what i have now?
Well, personally, I’m with AT&T, and the only time that I’ve lost signal is when I’ve been in the middle of a causeway. Their packages are competitive, and offer wireless internet throughout a residence, high-speed internet, telephone service, and cable, as well as family rates on cell phone usage that include free 3G phones as options.
I had to upgrade from the original LG shine, just this summer, and they were nice enough to actually have an updated version of the shine available. I actually switched from Sprint, over a year ago, because they wouldn’t replace, upgrade, or repair my phone, without me starting a whole new contract. All the while, the stupid thing never got any signal, and was becoming unusable, not to mention the battery life.
So my advice is to take a look at what your family is spending on all those separate services, and see if a package might not be a better option, and would allow you to get a phone that gets better signal. Barring that, see if there isn’t a program that will let you get a new phone as a simple customer service. AT&T did it for me, and I just had to pay shipping, without changing plans. Verizon may do the same. And if all of that fails, see about switching providers, and what plans or packages might be more appealing for your family. I suggest looking at cell phone kiosks located in warehouse clubs like Sam’s, Costco, or BJ’s. You can also look on the company websites to see what are available in your area. You may actually save your family hundreds or thousands a year, if you find a smarter option for them.
Best of luck, I wish I could help more, but there really is no way to boost signal. They’ve said that putting a foil gum wrapper or some foil under your phone’s back-plate would help, and they’ll try to market big heavy diddly-boppers that only make you look silly. You’re just better off trying to upgrade to a 3G or 4G, which use satellite signals to communicate, rather than local receiving towers. Also, instead of calling or texting, if you have internet access at home, just IM to them over the phone, or call them, using Google phone, or skype, the former of which is free in country, and the latter of which is free to other skype users.
