Who has used the software(for a fee) to watch tv on a pc?

Are the companies that offer software(for a fee) to watch tv on my pc a good choice, or are they "too good to be true’?
I want to watch live tv like "American Idol" or "Oprah" on my computer instead of paying the ridiculous prices for cable or satellite. Are these offers of "thousands of channels" valid?
None of the websites will actually tell what their channel line-up is, which concerns me.
Please let me know if you have tried this, and what you thought of the service they offer.

These services are scams. All they do is offer you access to free stuff that anyone can access. They don’t give you cable channels or anything like that. If you want to watch live TV on your PC, you need a tuner card and probably a set of rabbit ears to pull in the signal. You will only be able to watch shows on channels that you receive over the airwaves. This is the only way to watch live TV on your PC unless the channel offers a live stream, which most don’t. You can watch TV later on sites like hulu.com, abc.com etc. But the only way to get cable channels is to pay for them.
